IBC ToteTexas

Reuse ledger, year to date: 41,200 totes diverted from Texas landfills this year. 2,060k lb of HDPE kept in service. 1,772k lb of steel cage recovered. 3,140 tons of CO₂e avoided. 92% of our wash water recycled on site. 68 Texas counties served from one Austin yard. Reference

S60x6 is not
two-inch NPT.

That single sentence resolves most of the fitting problems in this industry. Here is the full dimensional reference so you can order the right adapter the first time.

The short answer

Composite IBC totes discharge through an S60x6 thread — 60 mm nominal, 6 mm pitch, coarse buttress profile, roughly 2.36 inches across. It is not a pipe thread. One moulded adapter converts it to 2 inch NPT, camlock or garden hose thread. Fill openings are 6 inch standard, 9 inch on food-grade and viscous-product units.

Adapters

Getting from the tote to your hose

One part does almost all of it. The rest is choosing which end you want.

Valves

Port geometry decides your transfer time

Valve types and effective bore

2 in full-port butterfly2.0 in≈ 1.8× on viscous product
3 in butterfly (large outlet)3.0 in≈ 3× on viscous product

On water the difference is modest. On syrup, molasses, edible oil or polymer it is the difference between a twenty-minute discharge and an afternoon.

Fittings glossary

What each part is for

  • S60x6 buttress

The default outlet on Schütz, Mauser and Werit tanks. Adapts to 2" NPT, camlock or garden hose with a single moulded adapter.

  • 2" NPT

What most US buyers actually want on the outlet. Tape the threads; NPT seals on the taper, not a gasket.

  • 2" camlock (Type A/B/C/E/F)

Fastest way to connect and disconnect a hose. Type C female coupler on the hose, Type F male adapter on the tote is the usual pairing.

  • 3/4" garden hose (GHT)

Adapts straight off S60x6. Restricts flow considerably — fine for drip, poor for filling a sprayer.

  • 6" screw lid

Vented lids prevent vacuum collapse when drawing down fast. Solid lids seal for transport. Know which one you have.

  • 9" screw lid

Common on food-grade and high-viscosity units. Easier to clean through, harder to seal.

  • 2" ball valve

Quarter-turn, positive shutoff, cheap to replace. Not ideal for very viscous product — the port is reduced.

  • 2" butterfly valve

Full-port design so syrup, oil and concentrate actually flow. The upgrade worth paying for on food-grade totes.

Seal compounds and chemical compatibility

The gasket is the cheapest part of the assembly and the one that decides whether a chemical programme runs for years or fails in a month.

  • EPDM — water, acids, bases, alcohols, hypochlorite. Poor with hydrocarbons and oils. The general-purpose default.
  • Viton (FKM) — fuels, oils, aromatics, many solvents. Poor with hot water, steam, ketones and strong bases.
  • PTFE-faced — near-universal chemical resistance, lower tolerance for compression set. Where nothing else survives.
  • Buna-N (nitrile) — common on cheap fittings, adequate for fuels and oils, poor with hypochlorite and ozone.

Compatibility determination is the offeror’s responsibility. We will tell you what we would use and point you at the manufacturer’s resistance chart, but we do not sign off on your chemistry.

Vented versus solid lids

A vented lid admits air as liquid leaves, which is the only thing preventing vacuum collapse of the bottle under pump. A solid lid seals for transport and isolates product from air. If you pump, vent — or crack the lid a quarter turn before you start. Full detail on the pumps and transfer page.

Identifying an unknown thread

Measure the male outside diameter with calipers, count threads across a known length, and look at the profile side-on. 60 mm with a sawtooth profile and no taper is S60x6. 2.375 inches with a symmetrical V and a visible taper is 2 inch NPT. If that still leaves you unsure, photograph it against a ruler and send it with your enquiry — we identify these several times a week.

Questions people actually ask

+What size is an IBC tote outlet?
S60x6 on almost every composite IBC — a 60 mm nominal coarse buttress thread with a 6 mm pitch. It measures about 2.36 inches across the male thread, which is close enough to 2 inch NPT to cause endless confusion and completely incompatible with it.
+How do I tell S60x6 from 2 inch NPT?
Thread profile. S60x6 has an asymmetric sawtooth (buttress) profile with widely spaced threads and no taper. NPT has a symmetrical V-profile, about 11.5 threads per inch, and a visible taper along its length. Look at it side-on in good light and the difference is obvious.
+What lid sizes exist?
6 inch is the standard fill opening on most 275 and 330 gallon totes. 9 inch appears on food-grade and high-viscosity units where cleaning access matters. Both come vented and solid — vented prevents vacuum collapse when pumping.
+Which camlock parts do I need?
The standard tote pairing is a Type F male adapter threaded onto the outlet and a Type C female coupler on the hose. Buy them as a pair and the compatibility question disappears.

+How high can I stack totes?
Empty, three high indoors on a level floor. Full and static, two high on matched pallets and improved level ground. In transit, never stack full totes.
+What thread is the outlet?
S60x6 on almost every composite IBC — 60 mm coarse buttress. It is not 2 inch NPT and NPT fittings will not screw directly into it. One moulded adapter converts it to NPT, camlock or garden hose.
+How many totes fit on a truck?
Twenty on the floor of a 48-foot flatbed or dry van, regardless of whether they're 275s or 330s. Forty if they're empty and double-stacked.
+How much does a full 275 gallon tote weigh?
About 2,425 lb with water. With liquid fertilizer it's about 3,130 lb, and with 93% sulfuric acid it's over 4,300 lb. Always calculate from your product's density.
+What are standard IBC tote dimensions?
48 inches long by 40 inches wide — one standard pallet position — with height varying by capacity: 46 in for 275 gallons, 53 in for 330, 56 in for 350.
